Christmas Pretzel Crack (sometimes called pretzel toffee bark or saltine toffee) is a simple, no-bake sweet made from crunchy pretzels topped with a buttery brown-sugar toffee and melted chocolate. Once chilled, it’s broken into shards, creating the irresistible crack that gives it its name. Or maybe it gets its name because it should come with a word of warning: it’s very addictive!

In the United States, saltine crackers are traditional, but pretzels bring a lovely salty crunch and a more festive twist. The combination of crisp, caramelised toffee and smooth chocolate makes this truly so addicting and delicious. This post has a step by step guide, tips and variations.

Here’s how to make Christmas pretzel crack:
Here’s a step by step guide for what you need to do, but you can find the full recipe at the bottom of the page for detailed instructions.

ONE: Line a baking tray with greaseproof paper. Arrange the pretzels in a single, even layer.

TWO: In a saucepan, melt the butter and sugar together over a medium heat. Keep stirring, and it will start bubbling.

THREE: When it’s melted, set a timer for 3 minutes and let it bubble and keep stirring. You must cook it long enough so it has a crack when it’s cooled, rather than chewy.

FOUR: Pour the hot toffee over the pretzels and smooth it out with a spatula.

FIVE: Pour the melted chocolate over the toffee layer and spread evenly. Sprinkle with flaky salt.

SIX: Leave to set in the fridge for a few hours until firm or freezer to speed it up. Once solid, cut into shards.
Cooking Tips:
To get hard snap toffee, not chewy – The toffee needs to be cooked long enough. Boil the butter and sugar mixture for 3 minutes, any less and it’ll stay chewy. Just keep stirring as it bubbles.
To make ahead: This recipe can be made up to a week ahead and kept chilled, making it ideal for edible gifts or last-minute Christmas gatherings.
For an edible gift: break the Christmas pretzel crack into shards and pack into tins or small boxes lined with greaseproof paper. Or place pieces in cellophane bags tied with festive ribbon. Add a little note: “Keep refrigerated. Best within 2 weeks.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, swap the butter for a vegan baking spread and use dairy-free chocolate. The texture stays crisp, though the toffee may set slightly softer.
If using a thermometer, aim for 149–154°C (300–310°F, the “hard crack” stage. If you don’t have one, simply boil and bubble for 3 minutes while stirring. You definitely don’t need a sugar thermometer.
Freeze for up to 2 months. Defrost overnight in the fridge, then serve straight from the fridge or at room temperature.
