Ingredients

  • 200 g salted pretzels
  • 225 g unsalted butter
  • 200 g soft dark brown sugar
  • 250 g dark chocolate or milk chocolate
  • Flakey salt

Instructions

  • Line a baking tray with greaseproof paper. Arrange the pretzels in a single, even layer.
  • In a saucepan, melt the butter and sugar together over a medium heat. Keep stirring, and it will start bubbling.
  • When it's melted, set a timer for 3 minutes and let it bubble and keep stirring. You must cook it long enough so it has a crack when it’s cooled, rather than chewy.
  • Pour the hot toffee over the pretzels and smooth it out with a spatula.
  • Melt the chocolate gently (either in a heatproof bowl over simmering water or in short bursts in the microwave).
  • Pour the melted chocolate over the toffee layer and spread evenly. Sprinkle with flaky salt and any extra toppings you fancy - nuts, chopped sweets, or biscuits are all great choices.
  • Leave to set in the fridge for a few hours until firm or freezer to speed it up. Once solid, cut into shards. Keep in the fridge in an airtight container. Perfect for snacking or wrapping up as an edible Christmas gift!

Notes

Scroll up for a step by step guide on how to make this Christmas pretzel crack.
To store: Keep the pretzel crack in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. It stays crisp and snappy when kept cold, but can also be served straight from the fridge or at room temperature.
To freeze: Once fully set and broken into pieces, place the shards in a freezer-safe container with greaseproof paper between the layers to stop them sticking. Freeze for up to 2 months. Defrost in the fridge overnight before serving.
Make ahead: Make it up to a week in advance, keep it chilled, and it will be ready to wrap as gifts or serve to friends.
Optional toppings:
Once the chocolate is poured over the toffee base, you could top with anything you like, such as:
  • Flaked almonds
  • Chopped pecans or peanuts
  • Chopped Rolos
  • Crushed Oreos
